A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER

I spent most of my working life being the person who shows up when things go wrong.

THE BACKGROUND

A different
frame of
reference.

I spent most of my working life being the person who shows up when things go wrong.

EMT and crew chief on a volunteer ambulance corps through the nineties. Later law enforcement, then armed security and dispatch at a 5,200-acre defense facility, coordinating fire and EMS across six posts a shift. Then a stretch on the Georgia interstate system — roughly ten calls a day, pulling people out of live traffic lanes.

A particular sense of humour develops in that work. It isn't cruelty. It's what's left after every other available reaction has been used up. People outside the job find it unsettling. People inside it find it load-bearing.

I eventually earned a Master's in Homeland Security and Public Health Preparedness, which mostly gave me formal terminology for things I had already watched happen.

So I have an unusual frame of reference for the word emergency. My laptop does not. It tells me a progress bar has 41 years remaining. It tells me a file is corrupted beyond recovery. It tells me an update is available, and asks again tomorrow, politely, forever. It reports all of this in exactly the tone it would use for a printer being low on paper — which is the correct tone, and nobody has ever thanked it for that.

Motivation.exe has stopped responding is not a crisis. I know what a crisis looks like. That gap is the entire joke.

mood.exe prints that vocabulary on shirts. Flat type, hard edges, our own window system — nothing borrowed from anybody's operating system. Drop 01 is ten pieces, made to order on garment-dyed and retail-fit cotton, so nothing sits in a warehouse waiting for someone to feel worse.

The garment-dyed pieces arrive already faded and keep going. They are not meant to stay the colour they arrived.

I am still a licensed EMT and a commissioned security officer here in Texas. If something is actually wrong, that is a different phone number.

There will be a Drop 02.
